How to sell semiconductor and electronics data to AI companies

How semiconductor, electronics and hardware companies can license yield, test, process and design data to AI labs, and how to handle export controls and IP.

Key points

  • Semiconductor process, yield and test data is some of the hardest industrial data for AI developers to get hold of.
  • Valuable data includes yield and defect data, process logs, test results, failure analysis and design verification records.
  • Export controls can apply to some technical data, so check classification before sharing anything.
  • Scope and generalisation protect process IP while keeping data useful.

Chip design and manufacturing are among the hardest problems AI is being applied to, and among the most data-starved. Process, yield and test data almost never leaves the fab. For fabs, OSATs, equipment makers, design houses and electronics manufacturers, that scarcity makes historical data valuable.

What buyers want

  • Yield and defect data: wafer maps, defect classifications, excursions and root causes.
  • Process and equipment logs: recipes, sensor traces, maintenance and drift.
  • Test data: parametric and functional test results, bin data.
  • Failure analysis reports and corrective actions.
  • Design and verification records: bug reports, verification logs, design reviews.
  • PCB assembly and test: AOI and ICT results, rework records.

Export controls

Some technical data relating to advanced semiconductors is controlled under UK, EU and US export rules. Before sharing anything, classify the data, check where the buyer is and who will use it, and get specialist advice where needed. Older-node and general manufacturing data is often outside the strictest controls, but you need to check, not assume.

Protecting process IP

  • Use older technology nodes or discontinued products.
  • Normalise or generalise sensitive parameters, and code tool and recipe identifiers.
  • Restrict licence use to model training, with no use to build competing processes.
  • Check customer agreements: test data on customer designs may belong to the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Do export controls apply to semiconductor data?

They can. Some technology and technical data relating to advanced semiconductors is controlled under UK, EU and US export regimes. Classify the data and check the buyer's location before sharing anything. This is a key part of our rights check.

We're a small electronics manufacturer. Is our data relevant?

Often, yes. Test results, failure analysis, rework records and production data from electronics manufacturing are valuable for AI in manufacturing and quality control, not just data from leading-edge fabs.
